What is the difference between freestanding and built-in?
A freestanding model stands loose next to the machine and you carry it to the sink when it is full. A built-in model or knock drawer disappears into the worktop, which keeps the top flat so you can simply wipe across it.
Why does a knock box have a rubber bar?
The rubber absorbs the impact when you knock out the portafilter. Knock against a hard edge or a bin and that shock lands directly on the metal rim, and after a few months you will see it back in dents.
Can coffee grounds go down the sink?
No, coffee grounds clump together in the drain and cause blockages over time. Empty the knock box into the bin or the green waste, and do so before it is full, because wet pucks compress and start to stick.
When do I replace the rubber bar?
As soon as the rubber no longer gives when you press on it. Through the combination of heat and coffee oils, rubber hardens over time, and a hard bar no longer absorbs the impact but passes it straight on.
