How much beer fits in a Maxim stein?
The large size holds 50 cl and the small one 28 cl. In practice you pour about 45 cl of beer into a half-litre stein, because the rest is the head of foam. A full stein weighs around a kilo including the glass.
Why does a beer stein have a handle?
A handle lets you hold the glass without wrapping your hand around the wall, so the beer does not warm up. With a half litre that you drink at a leisurely pace, that makes a noticeable difference in temperature. The handle also gives you a firm grip on a heavy, full glass.
Why does my head of foam collapse?
Usually because of grease in the glass: a fingerprint or a trace of washing-up liquid breaks the foam down. Wash beer glasses separately from greasy tableware, rinse them thoroughly and let them drain on a rack instead of drying them with a cloth.
Are beer steins dishwasher safe?
Yes, the glass is tempered and handles the temperature. Do use a detergent without an oil-based rinse aid, because those residues break down the head of foam later on. Place the steins loosely in the rack so the spray arm reaches the inside.
