What is the difference between a Hawthorne and a Julep strainer?
The Hawthorne has a coiled spring that grips the inside of the tin and holds back ice, fruit pulp and herbs after shaking. The Julep is a spoon-shaped strainer without a spring, meant for drinks you stir in a mixing glass.
What does double straining a cocktail mean?
You hold a fine-mesh strainer under the Hawthorne and pour straight through it. That catches even the smallest ice crystals and pulp particles, so a cocktail with citrus arrives clear in the glass instead of cloudy.
Can a cocktail strainer go in the dishwasher?
Plain stainless steel is fine. The copper, gold and black versions have a thin coating that salt and high temperatures turn dull, so wash those by hand and dry them straight away.
How do you clean the spring of a Hawthorne strainer?
Take the spring off the strainer before you wash it. Mint leaves and fruit pulp get caught between the coils and will not come out with a rinse alone, and they start to smell after a shift.
