What is Gentleman Jack?

One extra filtration, and you can taste it

Every drop of Jack Daniel's is slowly filtered through a three-meter layer of maple charcoal before aging, a process that takes about ten days. With Old No. 7, the whiskey goes straight into the bottle after aging in oak barrels. Gentleman Jack gets a second charcoal filtration after aging. According to the brand, it is the only whiskey in the world to be filtered through charcoal twice.

That second round removes the rough edges. What remains is a whiskey with a silky-smooth texture and sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, and light spices, with less smoke than regular Jack. It has the same 40% ABV as Old No. 7, but is made to be sipped slowly rather than mixed with cola.

How to drink it

How to taste Gentleman Jack

Gentleman Jack is smooth enough to drink neat. Start neat, then see what a drop of water or an ice cube does.

Neat in a tasting glass

Pour 3 to 4 cl at room temperature into a tulip-shaped glass and let it sit for a moment. Smell it first, then take small sips: the vanilla comes through best when you don't rush it.

With one large ice cube

40 ml over a large ice cube in a heavy tumbler. The ice melts slowly, chilling the whiskey without diluting it too quickly. This makes it even rounder.

Highball with sparkling water

40 ml Gentleman Jack in a tall glass filled with ice, topped up with 120 ml cold sparkling water and an orange zest. Light, dry and a lovely way to taste its smoothness.

Everything about Jack Daniel's →
What percentage of alcohol is in Gentleman Jack?
Gentleman Jack contains 40% alcohol, just like Old No. 7. Jack Daniel's Bonded is stronger at 50%; Tennessee Honey, Apple and Fire are 35%.
What is the difference between Gentleman Jack and Old No. 7?
Old No. 7 passes through charcoal once, before maturation. After maturation, Gentleman Jack undergoes a second filtration through maple wood charcoal. This makes it smoother, with more vanilla and less smoke.
Is Gentleman Jack a bourbon?
No, it's a Tennessee whiskey. The difference from bourbon lies in the maple charcoal filtering, and with Gentleman Jack this even happens twice.
Can you drink Gentleman Jack with Coke?
You can, but it's a shame to miss out on the smoothness you're buying it for. Old No. 7 is intended for Jack & Coke; Gentleman Jack is best enjoyed neat, with an ice cube or in an Old Fashioned.
How long does an opened bottle of Gentleman Jack keep?
Years, if you store it upright, tightly sealed and out of sunlight. If the bottle is nearly empty, drink it within a year, because the aromas evaporate faster when there is a lot of air in the bottle.
