What is Johnnie Walker?

A Scottish blend that has traveled the world for 200 years

Johnnie Walker is a blended Scotch whisky: a mixture of malt and grain whiskies from across Scotland. It began in 1820 as John Walker's grocery shop in Kilmarnock, where he blended whiskies himself to create a consistent flavor. His son and grandson turned it into a global brand, with the slanted labels and square bottle as trademarks.

Today, Johnnie Walker is the best-selling Scotch in the world and is owned by Diageo. The colors on the label indicate the style and age: from the spicy Red Label for mixing to the rare Blue Label for drinking neat. A hint of smoke is characteristic of the brand, coming mainly from the Islay malts in the blend.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Johnnie Walker

Blended Scotch is made to be versatile: neat, with ice or in a long drink. The glass determines how much smoke and fruit you taste.

Neat

Black Label or higher in a tulip-shaped tasting glass, 30 to 40 ml, at room temperature. A drop of water opens up the whisky and brings the smoke forward.

Glass: tasting glass →

On the rocks

Black or Double Black over one large ice cube in a heavy tumbler. The ice makes the whisky smoother; small ice melts too quickly and dilutes it.

Glass: tumbler →

Highball

50 ml Red or Black Label with 150 ml of ginger ale or soda water in a long drink glass filled with ice. The way Johnnie Walker is almost always enjoyed in Asia.

What is the difference between Johnnie Walker Red and Black Label?
Red Label is a young, spicy blend with no age statement, made to mix with cola or ginger ale. Black Label consists of whiskies that are at least 12 years old and is rounder, smoother and smokier; drink it neat or on the rocks.
What percentage of alcohol is in Johnnie Walker?
Almost all Johnnie Walker whiskies contain 40% alcohol: Red, Black, Double Black, Gold and Blue Label. Green Label is slightly stronger at 43%.
Is Johnnie Walker a single malt?
No. Johnnie Walker is a blended Scotch: a mixture of malt and grain whiskies from different distilleries. Green Label is the exception: it is a blended malt, made only from malt whiskies, but still from multiple distilleries.
What is the best way to drink Johnnie Walker?
Red Label in a highball with ginger ale or cola. Black Label and Double Black neat or over a large ice cube in a tumbler. Green, Gold and Blue Label neat, optionally with a drop of water. According to the brand, Gold Label Reserve is also delicious ice-cold straight from the freezer.
Which Johnnie Walker makes the best gift?
Black Label is the safe choice: well-known, affordable and enjoyable for everyone. If you want to make an impression, choose Green Label (for malt lovers) or Blue Label (the top model). Double Black is ideal for those who enjoy smoky whisky.
How long does an opened bottle of Johnnie Walker keep?
Whisky does not spoil. An opened bottle stays good for years if you store it upright, tightly sealed and out of the sun. If there is less than a third left, drink it within a year: the air in the bottle slowly causes it to lose aroma.
