What is Passoã?

Passion fruit from Brazil in a French bottle

Passoã is a passion fruit liqueur launched in 1985 by the French liqueur house Rémy Cointreau; since 2017, the brand has been largely owned by Amsterdam-based Lucas Bols. Its base is juice from Brazilian passion fruits, blended with alcohol and sugar into a 17% pink-red liqueur. The black bottle with the sunset is its trademark.

Passoã became world-famous through the Pornstar Martini, the cocktail Douglas Ankrah created in London in 2002 with vodka, Passoã, passion fruit purée and vanilla, with a shot of prosecco served alongside. In the Netherlands, Passoã is also a classic mixer: with orange juice, tonic or 7-Up. Ready-to-drink cans are now available, such as Passion Fruit Martini and Passoã Orange.

What does Passoã taste like?

Sweet and sour, like a ripe passion fruit

Nose

Passion fruit & tropical fruit

Intense, fresh passion fruit with a hint of mango and citrus. Unmistakably tropical.

Palate

Sweet with a sour zing

Sweet at first, followed by the characteristic tartness of passion fruit. Juicy and refreshing, not syrupy.

Finish

Fresh and fruity

A refreshing, slightly bitter finish of passion fruit seeds. You can barely taste the 17% alcohol.

Sweet 3/5
Sour 3/5
Fruity 5/5
Strength 2/5

Passoã's flavor profile neat. Mixed with orange juice or tonic, it becomes lighter; in a Pornstar Martini, the vodka's vanilla joins in.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Passoã

Passoã is served cold and mixed. The Pornstar Martini is the queen, but with orange juice or tonic, it's ready in ten seconds.

Pornstar Martini

50 ml vanilla vodka, 25 ml Passoã, 25 ml passion fruit purée, and 15 ml lime juice, shaken and strained into a coupe. Garnish with half a passion fruit and serve with a shot of prosecco on the side.

Passoã tonic

50 ml Passoã with 150 ml tonic and a lime wedge in a large wine glass with ice. Drier and fresher than with orange juice; the bitterness of the tonic pairs beautifully with the passion fruit.

How to make Passoã orange juice: the recipe step by step

Passoã with orange juice is the Dutch classic. This is how to make it refreshing and not too sweet.

What you need

5 cl Passoã
15 cl chilled orange juice
A highball glass full of ice cubes
Half a passion fruit or an orange slice

How to make it

1. Chill the bottle of Passoã and the juice in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
2. Fill a highball glass to the rim with ice cubes.
3. Pour the Passoã over the ice and top up with the orange juice.
4. Stir two or three times from the bottom upwards.
5. Place the halved passion fruit on the ice or put the orange slice on the rim.

Tip

A splash of fresh lime juice makes it less sweet. If you love passion fruit, also try the Passion Fruit Caipirinha and Don's Special Daiquiri. View our highball glasses.

What percentage of alcohol is in Passoã?
Passoã contains 17% alcohol. Ready-to-drink cans such as Passoã Orange and Passion Fruit Martini are significantly lower, at around 5 to 7%. Mixed with juice or tonic, the bottled version also comes to around 5%.
What is Passoã made from?
Made from the juice of Brazilian passion fruits (maracujá), mixed with alcohol and sugar. Passoã is a French brand launched in 1985 by Rémy Cointreau and now largely owned by Lucas Bols. At launch, Passoã was 20%; in Europe, it is now 17%.
What is in a Pornstar Martini?
Vanilla vodka, Passoã, passion fruit purée, lime juice and a little vanilla syrup, shaken and strained into a coupe, garnished with half a passion fruit. A shot of prosecco is served alongside it. The cocktail was created in 2002 by Douglas Ankrah in London.
What can you mix Passoã with?
With orange juice (the classic), tonic, 7-Up, prosecco or soda. It is also delicious with a splash of vodka, or in cocktails such as Hurricane and Sex on the Beach instead of peach liqueur.
Does Passoã need to be refrigerated?
After opening, yes: Passoã is largely fruit juice and stays fresh longer in the refrigerator. When properly sealed, an opened bottle remains good for about six months. Unopened, you can store it in a cool, dark place.
What is the difference between Passoã and Safari?
Both are tropical fruit liqueurs, but Passoã (17%) is purely passion fruit: pink-red, sweet and sour. Safari (20%) is orange and tastes like a mix of exotic fruits. You always use Passoã for a Pornstar Martini.
