The world's best-selling blended Scotch and the whisky made for mixing. Spicy with cinnamon and pepper, fresh with apple and finished with a smoky tail: at its best in a tall glass full of ice with ginger ale or cola.

What is Johnnie Walker Red Label?

Johnnie Walker's blended whisky

Johnnie Walker Red Label is the house's entry-level bottle: a blend of up to 35 whiskies from distilleries spread across Scotland. There is no age statement on the label, and there does not need to be. Red Label is not about long maturation, but about a consistent, lively flavour that holds its own when you add ice and soft drink.

While Black Label consists of whiskies aged for at least twelve years and is rounder, Red Label is younger, spicier and more direct. Think cinnamon, pepper and fresh apple, with a long, smoky finish. The brand itself recommends serving it over ice in a highball glass with ginger ale or cola, and that is exactly where it shows why it is the world's best-selling blended Scotch.

What does Johnnie Walker Red Label taste like?

Spicy, fresh and slightly salty

Nose

Spices and apple

Aromatic spices with cinnamon and pepper at the forefront, underpinned by a fresh, fruity sweetness of ripe apple.

Palate

Lively and balanced

Fresh, sweet and fruity, with a salty note that keeps it balanced. Spicier and lighter than Black Label.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Red Label

Red Label was made for ice and bubbles. A tall glass, plenty of ice and a good mixer do more for this whisky than a tasting glass.

Red Label highball

Fill a long drink glass to the brim with ice, add 50 ml Red Label and 150 ml ginger ale, and garnish with a lime wedge or an apple slice. The ginger enhances the cinnamon and pepper.

Whisky and cola

40 ml Red Label with 160 ml ice-cold cola in a long drink glass full of ice and a lemon wedge. Simple, and the smoky finish gives the cola a little more depth.

With soda over ice

40 ml Red Label with 80 ml cold soda water over large ice cubes in a tumbler. Without sugar, you can taste how fresh and briny this blend really is.

Everything about Johnnie Walker →
What percentage of alcohol is in Johnnie Walker Red Label?
Johnnie Walker Red Label contains 40% alcohol, just like Black Label, Double Black, Gold Label Reserve and Blue Label.
What is the difference between Red Label and Black Label?
Red Label has no age statement and is younger, spicier and fresher, made for mixing. Black Label consists of whiskies aged for at least twelve years and is rounder and smoother, better for drinking neat or on the rocks.
What do you mix Johnnie Walker Red Label with?
Ginger ale and cola are the classics, and the brand itself recommends them. Soda water also works well if you want it less sweet. Use about one part whisky to three parts mixer and plenty of ice.
Can you drink Red Label neat?
You can, but it wasn't made for that. When drunk neat, the spicy notes of cinnamon and pepper stand out most. If you want a Johnnie Walker to drink neat, go for Black Label or higher.
How many calories are in Johnnie Walker Red Label?
Approximately 221 kilocalories per 100 ml. A 4 cl glass therefore contains around 88 kcal, excluding the mixer.
