Hertog Jan
Hertog Jan is a Dutch brewery from Arcen, in North Limburg. Known for a full-bodied pils and specialty beers such as Tripel and Grand Prestige. Here you can read what Hertog Jan is, which beers Gall & Gall sells, what they taste like and which glass goes with them.
A Limburg brewery named after a duke
Hertog Jan is brewed in Arcen, a village on the Meuse in North Limburg. The name refers to Duke John I of Brabant, a medieval duke portrayed in songs and stories as a lover of beer and festivities. The brewery is now part of AB InBev, the Belgian brewing group behind Leffe and other brands.
The best-known Hertog Jan is its pils: an all-malt beer with a rich flavor, a golden color and a bitter finish. The brewery also makes a full range of specialty beers. Grand Prestige is the strongest: a dark barley wine at 10%, brewed with five types of malt. Hertog Jan calls it its quadrupel. There is also a Tripel, a Weizener, Karakter and an alcohol-free 0.0 made with the same grains as the pils.
In brief
From pilsener to barley wine
Gall & Gall sells the pils in cans, the alcohol-free 0.0, Grand Prestige in two sizes and a gift pack with five different beers.

Hertog Jan Grand Prestige

Full-bodied and malty, with a bitter finish
Grain and a hint of hops
The pilsner smells of malt and grain, with lightly herbal hops. Grand Prestige smells of caramel, dried fruit, and a hint of alcohol.
Round and full
The pilsner feels fuller and rounder than many other Dutch pilsners, with a soft malt sweetness. Grand Prestige is syrupy and sweet, balanced by bitterness.
Bitter and dry
The pilsner finishes with a distinct, pleasant bitterness. Grand Prestige has a long, warming finish.
Flavor profile of Hertog Jan Pilsener. Grand Prestige scores much higher on sweetness and body, while the 0.0 scores lower on body.
How to pour Hertog Jan
Drink the pilsner cold with a firm head. Grand Prestige, on the other hand, should not be too cold and is best served in a smaller glass, taking your time.
Pilsner cold, Grand Prestige not
Pour the pilsner and the 0.0 at 4 to 6 degrees, straight from the refrigerator. Grand Prestige is best enjoyed at around 10 to 12 degrees. Take that bottle out of the refrigerator half an hour before pouring, or store it in a cool cellar.
More about pilsner →Two fingers of foam
Rinse the glass with cold water, hold it at an angle, and pour slowly down the side. Hold the glass upright when it is three-quarters full, so that a two-finger head forms. Pour Grand Prestige more gently, with a smaller head.
More about pouring beer →Aging Grand Prestige
According to the brewery, Grand Prestige becomes richer with age. If you want to try this, store the bottle upright, somewhere cool and dark. Taste a young and an older bottle side by side: the older one is often rounder, with more dried fruit.
Organize a beer tasting →Hertog Jan at the table
The full-bodied pilsner pairs with hearty food and drinks. Grand Prestige is a beer for pairing with cheese or enjoying after a meal.
Drinks and snacks
Bitterballen, cheese cubes, sausage, and nuts. The bitter finish cuts through the fat.
Limburgian fare
Sour meat stew with fries, a schnitzel, or a hearty hamburger. A full-bodied pilsner pairs well with sweet-and-sour and rich dishes.
Aged cheese
Aged Gouda, blue cheese, or a hard goat cheese. The sweetness and caramel of the beer complement the saltiness beautifully.
Dessert and chocolate
Dark chocolate, a chocolate cake, or a plate of nuts and dried figs after the meal.
The right glass for Hertog Jan
For pilsner, use a straight or slightly tapered glass, or a stemmed beer glass at the table. Drink Grand Prestige from a tulip or a smaller tasting glass so the aroma of caramel and fruit stays near your nose. With a 30 cl bottle, a 38 cl tulip leaves plenty of room for the head.
