What is Bowmore?

The oldest distillery on Islay

Bowmore has stood on Loch Indaal, in the village of the same name, since 1779, making it the oldest distillery on Islay. It is also one of the few in Scotland that still has its own maltings: some of the barley is germinated on the floor and dried over peat fires, exactly as was done everywhere in the past.

Bowmore's smoke is prominent but less heavy than that of the distilleries on the south coast. Beneath it lies a second layer that you rarely encounter so clearly in other Islay whiskies: tropical fruit, mango and peach, especially in the older bottlings. The oldest casks rest in No. 1 Vaults, a warehouse whose floor lies below sea level and whose walls border the surf.

What does Bowmore taste like?

Smoke, sea salt, and tropical fruit

Nose

Peat smoke & sea air

Peat smoke with sea salt and lemon zest, followed by honey and a hint of tropical fruit. Less tarry than Islay's south coast.

Palate

Round and lightly salty

Smoke and sea salt up front, with honey, citrus, and a sweet core. The sherry bottles also bring dried fruit and chocolate.

Finish

Long and briny

A long finish with smoke, salt, and a light sweetness. Warm rather than sharp.

Sweet 3/5
Spicy 3/5
Smoky 4/5
Intensity 2/5

Flavor profile of Bowmore 12 Years. The 15 and 9 are sweeter due to the sherry; the 21 scores higher in intensity. For comparison: Lagavulin is 5/5 smoky.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Bowmore

Bowmore is the most approachable of the peated Islay whiskies, making it the only one you can also mix with comfortably.

Neat at room temperature

4 cl in a tulip-shaped tasting glass. Let it sit for a minute before smelling it: the smoke comes first, followed by sea salt, and only then the honey and fruit beneath.

Glass: tasting glass →

With a few drops of water

Two to three drops of cold water open up the whisky and push the smoke slightly into the background. This makes a noticeable difference, especially with the 21 Years at 46.8%.

As a Penicillin

50 ml blended whisky with lemon and honey-ginger syrup, shaken and strained, topped with a 10 ml float of Bowmore 12. Bowmore's softer smoke works better here than a heavy Islay.

What percentage of alcohol is in Bowmore?
The 9 and 12 Years are 40% ABV, the 15 and 18 Years are 43% ABV, and the 21 Years Sherry Cask is 46.8% ABV.
Is Bowmore very smoky?
Smoky, yes, but less intense than Lagavulin, Laphroaig or Ardbeg. Bowmore is on the western side of Islay and sits between the peated south coast and the gentler north. That is why it is often recommended as a first Islay whisky.
What is the difference between the Bowmore 12 and 15?
The 12 Years is matured for twelve years, is 40% ABV and is light, smoky and citrusy. After twelve years in ex-bourbon casks, the 15 spends another three years in Oloroso sherry casks, is 43% ABV and is darker, fuller and sweeter, with dried fruit alongside the smoke.
Does Bowmore have its own maltings?
Yes. Some of the barley is still germinated on the floor and dried over peat fires at the distillery itself. That has become exceptional in Scotland: most distilleries now buy their malt.
What is No. 1 Vaults?
Bowmore's oldest warehouse, whose floor lies below sea level and whose walls border the waves of Loch Indaal. The casks mature there in constantly cool, humid and salty air.
What do you eat with Bowmore?
Smoked salmon, oysters and blue cheese are the classics: the salt and smoke in the whisky complement them. With the sherry casks, dark chocolate also works well.
