What is Smokey Monkey?

What makes Smokey Monkey different?

Smokey Monkey is a blended malt Scotch whisky from William Grant & Sons, the smoky sibling of Monkey Shoulder. While the original uses only unpeated Speyside malts, this one combines peated and unpeated single malts in the blend. The peat provides the smoke; the unpeated malts keep it soft and sweet. Maturation in oak casks creates a whisky that is smoky and creamy-sweet at the same time.

So it is not a heavy peat bomb like an Islay malt, but an entry point into smoke. The philosophy is the same as with regular Monkey Shoulder: good enough to drink neat, made to mix. Both bottles are 40% ABV; Smokey Monkey is slightly drier and has that extra layer of smoke that a cocktail like the Penicillin captures in a single bottle.

What does Smokey Monkey taste like?

Smoke, vanilla and a hint of citrus

Nose

Smoked oak

Smoked oak and peat, with soft vanilla and subtle citrus underneath. The smoke is clear, but never harsh.

Palate

Smoky and creamy

Creamy and sweet, with peat that slowly emerges and a lightly spicy note. Monkey Shoulder’s sweetness is still there, just a little drier.

Finish

Smoky and sweet

A warm, smoky finish with a sweet undertone. The smoke lingers without overpowering the palate.

Smokey Monkey's flavor profile neat. With ginger ale or in a Penicillin, the smoke softens and the sweetness intensifies.

How to drink it

How to taste and mix Smokey Monkey

Start neat with a few drops of water to get to know the smoke, then mix it. The smoke really comes into its own in a long drink or sour cocktail.

Smokey Monkey & ginger ale

50 ml Smokey Monkey with 150 ml ginger ale in a highball glass filled with ice, with a lime wedge. The ginger and smoke enhance each other; this is the serve recommended by the brand itself.

Everything about Monkey Shoulder →
What percentage of alcohol is in Smokey Monkey?
Smokey Monkey contains 40% alcohol, exactly the same as regular Monkey Shoulder.
What is the difference between Monkey Shoulder and Smokey Monkey?
Regular Monkey Shoulder contains only unpeated malts and is sweet and smoke-free. Smokey Monkey combines peated and unpeated single malts, creating a gentle layer of smoke over the vanilla and citrus. It is also slightly drier.
Is Smokey Monkey very smoky?
No, the smoke is distinct but gentle. Those who like heavily smoky Islay whisky will find it mild; those who have never tried smoky whisky will find it a good introduction.
What do you mix Smokey Monkey with?
Ginger ale and a lime wedge are the best-known serve. In cocktails, it pairs best with honey, ginger and sweet liqueurs, as in the Penicillin, Rusty Nail and Godfather.
Can you drink Smokey Monkey neat?
Yes. Neat or with a few drops of water, you can best taste how the smoke, vanilla and citrus come together. A tasting glass helps capture the aroma.
