Virgin Sex on
the Beach

Virgin Sex on the Beach is the easiest classic to make without alcohol, because its character already comes largely from the fruit. Peach nectar takes the place of the vodka and the peach liqueur, the orange juice and cranberry juice remain, and a centilitre of fresh lime juice keeps the whole thing fresh rather than sweet. Tall glass, lots of ice and cranberry last: in colour and flavour, it remains close to the Sex on the Beach.

The story

The Sex on the Beach is a child of 1980s America. In the autumn of 1984, De Kuyper’s peach schnapps Peachtree entered the US market, and within a few years entire bars were running on peach and juice. First came the Fuzzy Navel with orange juice, followed by this cocktail, which is attributed to bartender Ted Pizio in Fort Lauderdale in 1987. The IBA included it in its official list: 4 cl vodka, 2 cl peach liqueur, and 4 cl of each juice. In English-speaking countries, the alcohol-free version is also known as Safe Sex on the Beach or Virgin on the Beach. Because vodka has little flavor of its own, this cocktail changes less without alcohol than most classics.

The right glass

Serve it in a tall, clear long drink glass of 36 to 47 cl, the same glass as the regular version. Then no one at the table will notice the difference, which is exactly the point with an alcohol-free drink. A sleek, clear glass shows the transition from orange to red at its best, and a 47 cl glass holds enough ice to keep 15 cl of juice cold. View our Sex on the Beach glasses.

Variations & twists

If you leave out the orange juice, you create an alcohol-free version of the Woo Woo: peach, cranberry and lime. With grapefruit juice instead of orange, you'll get close to a Sea Breeze. For a summery slush, blend all the juices with a generous scoop of crushed ice. If you want to make it festive, top up a larger glass with 5 cl of sparkling water. Find even more alcohol-free recipes among the mocktails.

Serving tip

Use freshly squeezed orange juice: it makes the drink noticeably fresher than juice from a carton. In summer, you can replace the nectar with a ripe peach from the blender, strained through a fine sieve.

Good to know

What replaces the vodka and peach liqueur

Vodka has little flavor of its own, so you don't need to replace it: it's mainly alcohol. The peach liqueur does more. It adds peach flavor, sweetness and a little thickness, which is why peach nectar is the logical substitute. Nectar is thicker than orange juice and gives the drink the body that would otherwise come from the liqueur. What you do miss is the dry finish of alcohol. That's why 1 cl of fresh lime juice is added: the acidity keeps the sweetness of the three types of juice in check. Taste after stirring; if it's still too sweet, add another half centiliter of lime juice.

Peach nectar, peach syrup or fresh peach

Supermarket peach nectar is the easiest choice and gives the most consistent flavor. Peach syrup works too, but it is much more concentrated: use 1.5 cl of syrup and top up with 4.5 cl of cold water, otherwise the drink quickly becomes too sweet. In summer, a ripe peach is the tastiest option. Peel it, blend the flesh until smooth, and press it through a fine sieve; 6 cl of purée then replaces the nectar one-to-one. Fresh purée is thicker, so stir a little longer before adding the cranberry juice.

Which cranberry juice should you choose?

Check the package carefully. Much of the cranberry juice sold in supermarkets is actually a cranberry drink with water and added sugar, while pure cranberry juice is so sour and tart that you can hardly drink it on its own. For this recipe, the regular sweetened variety works best because the proportions are tailored to it. If you use pure juice, leave out the lime juice and add 1 cl of sugar syrup; the cranberry's acidity will do the work. The advantage of pure juice is that the color is a deeper red and the gradient in the glass is more noticeable.

For a children's party or a group

For eight glasses, mix 48 cl of peach nectar, 32 cl of orange juice, and 8 cl of lime juice in a one-and-a-half-liter pitcher from our pitchers and chill it for at least two hours. Keep the cranberry juice separate and add 4 cl to each glass just before serving; otherwise, within ten minutes, the color gradient will become one uniform pink mass. It contains no alcohol or caffeine, so children can drink along too. If you would rather not use the name at a children's party, call it Virgin on the Beach. Difference from the regular Sex on the Beach

The regular version contains 4 cl of vodka and 2 cl of peach liqueur, bringing the drink to around 12 percent alcohol in the glass. Without those two ingredients, the virgin version is fruitier and rounder, and because there is no alcohol left to temper the sweetness, lime juice is added. The quantity remains virtually the same: 15 cl of liquid compared with 14 cl in the original, so the glass is just as full. The color, garnish, and glass are identical. If you serve both at a party, give the virgin version its own straw or an extra cherry so no one gets confused.

Ingredients at a glance

What is in a Virgin Sex on the Beach? Four juices and a garnish: 6 cl peach nectar, 4 cl fresh orange juice, 4 cl cranberry juice and 1 cl fresh lime juice, finished with an orange slice and a cocktail cherry. Refrigerate everything beforehand, so the ice does not have to cool the juice first and melts more slowly. There is no syrup or grenadine; the color comes entirely from the cranberry and orange. This keeps it balanced, fresh and not too sweet.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a Virgin Sex on the Beach?

A Virgin Sex on the Beach consists of 6 cl peach nectar, 4 cl orange juice, 4 cl cranberry juice and 1 cl fresh lime juice, served over plenty of ice in a tall glass. The peach nectar replaces the vodka and peach liqueur in the original, while the lime juice keeps it fresh.

How do you make Sex on the Beach without alcohol?

Fill a highball glass with ice, pour in the peach nectar, orange juice and lime juice, and stir briefly. Then slowly pour the cranberry juice over the rounded side of a bar spoon without stirring again, so the red and orange remain visible. Garnish with orange and a cherry.

Is Virgin Sex on the Beach suitable for children?

Yes. It contains no alcohol or caffeine, only fruit juice. However, the nectar and juices naturally contain quite a lot of sugar, so it is more of a treat than a thirst-quencher. At a children's party, you can call it Virgin on the Beach, a name that is also commonly used in English.

Which glass do you use for a Virgin Sex on the Beach?

A tall, clear highball glass holding 36 to 47 cl, the same as for the regular version. It holds enough ice to keep the juices cold, and you can see the color gradient from orange to red at its best. This way, the alcohol-free version blends in at the table unnoticed.
