What is Licor 43?

Spanish vanilla liqueur with 43 ingredients

Licor 43, officially Cuarenta y Tres, is a liqueur from Cartagena on Spain's Mediterranean coast. The recipe contains 43 ingredients, mainly Mediterranean spices, citrus fruits and vanilla, and is said to date back to a drink from Roman times. Since 1946, it has been made by the Zamora family.

You drink it neat over ice, with milk or in a Carajillo, the Spanish coffee cocktail. In recent years, creamy variants have been added, such as Horchata, Chocolate and Crème Brûlée.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Licor 43

Licor 43 is sweet, which is why you drink it cold: with ice, with milk or with coffee. Each recipe calls for a different glass.

Neat with ice

Pour 40 ml of Licor 43 over a large ice cube in a tumbler. The cold tames the sweetness and brings out the vanilla beautifully. Also delicious with a slice of orange.

What percentage of alcohol is in Licor 43?
Licor 43 Original contains 31% alcohol. The creamy varieties Horchata, Chocolate, Crème Brûlée, and Speculoos are 16%, comparable to a cream liqueur such as Baileys.
Where does the name Licor 43 come from?
It comes from the number of ingredients: the recipe contains 43 herbs, citrus fruits, and spices. In Spanish, the liqueur is therefore also called Cuarenta y Tres. It has been made in Cartagena by the Zamora family since 1946.
How do you drink Licor 43?
Cold. Neat over ice, mixed with milk (the Dutch classic), or with espresso in a Carajillo. Also delicious with orange juice or tonic. At room temperature, it is too sweet for most people.
What is a Carajillo?
A Spanish-Mexican coffee cocktail made with espresso and Licor 43, shaken with ice and served in a tumbler. Ratio: 1 shot of espresso to 40 ml of Licor 43. Some bars carefully float the espresso on top of the liqueur.
What is the difference between Licor 43 and Licor 43 Horchata?
Original is a clear yellow liqueur at 31% with vanilla and citrus. Horchata is a creamy blend of Licor 43 and tiger nut horchata, plant-based and 16% ABV. Horchata is mainly enjoyed neat and ice-cold.
How long does an opened bottle of Licor 43 last?
Original stays good for years when stored tightly closed, cool, and dark. The creamy varieties have a shorter shelf life: refrigerate them after opening and drink them within six months. Always check the label.
