What is Laphroaig Select?

The friendliest introduction to Laphroaig

Laphroaig Select is a beautifully balanced Islay single malt with the classic smoky character of the distillery. What sets it apart from the 10 Years is its maturation: the whisky is a blend of five cask types, including sherry casks and new American oak, which add sweetness and roundness that temper the peat smoke.

It is bottled at 40%, like the 10 Years, and is the softest and most approachable Laphroaig. That makes it ideal for anyone discovering Islay, and for anyone looking for a smoky whisky to mix without immediately opening a more expensive bottle.

What does Laphroaig Select taste like?

Sweet beginning, smoky middle, floral finish

Nose

Soft and sweet

Select opens sweet, with Laphroaig's peat smoke following gently rather than leading the way.

Palate

Dry and smoky

Classic Laphroaig: dry, smoky, and peaty, but rounder and milder than the 10 Years thanks to the five cask types.

Finish

Long and floral

A long finish with a surprisingly floral note, as the smoke slowly fades.

Flavor profile of Laphroaig Select neat. In a cocktail, mainly the smoke remains, while the sweetness blends into the other ingredients.

How to drink it

Three ways to serve Laphroaig Select

Select is the Laphroaig you can mix without hesitation. Neat, it is mild enough for a beginner; in a cocktail, it adds just enough smoke.

Neat in a whisky glass

30 ml at room temperature in a whisky glass. Smell it gently first; the sweet nose is the best part. If you want it softer, add one ice cube.

Everything about Laphroaig →
What percentage of alcohol is in Laphroaig Select?
Laphroaig Select has 40% alcohol, just like the 10 Years. Quarter Cask, Lore, and 10 Sherry Oak are all 48%.
What is the difference between Laphroaig Select and Laphroaig 10?
The 10 Years matures for ten years in ex-bourbon casks and is distinctly medicinal and smoky. Select is a blend of five cask types, including sherry and new American oak, has no age statement, and is softer, sweeter, and more approachable.
Is Laphroaig Select suitable for beginners?
Yes, it’s the mildest Laphroaig. The smoke is there, but the sweet nose and floral finish make it much more approachable than the 10 Years.
Is it called Laphroaig Select or Oak Select?
Both names are used: on the bottle and in stores, you’ll see it as Laphroaig Select or Laphroaig Oak Select. It’s the same 40% whisky.
Can you make cocktails with Laphroaig Select?
Absolutely, it’s very suitable for that. The Penicillin is the best-known, but a Whiskey Sour, Hot Toddy, or Paper Plane also gets a lovely smoky layer with Select.
