This black-plated model from the Speakeasy line has the classic round, slightly domed shape with perforations that you place in the glass with the dome facing down. Hold it against the rim with your thumb and pour in one motion; the ice stays behind while the drink flows through cleanly. The design fits virtually any mixing glass and most shaker tins, so you do not need to adapt your setup to it.

Why a julep instead of a hawthorne

A hawthorne strainer with a spring is made for shaken cocktails full of ice shards. For stirred drinks—a Manhattan, a Negroni, a Martini—that spring is unnecessary and tends to get in the way. The julep is quicker to handle, easier to keep clean because there is no spiral where pulp can get stuck, and gives you more control over the pouring speed.

Stainless steel with black plating

The steel is 304 grade, the standard you want in an environment with acid from citrus and salt from garnishes: it does not corrode or discolor. The black plating is a surface coating, so hand-wash it rather than putting it in the dishwasher to keep the finish intact.
